The question
When you meet someone, you interpret them through your own lens. Their story becomes a story you narrate about them.
AVDP puts one person on camera for a long unhurried talk and keeps the edit long enough to see how they speak when nobody is performing. The question is whether the stories they tell about themselves still sound like theirs when the room is built to pull them out of interview mode.
The format
Each episode is set up so the guest is not performing for the camera. The room changes episode to episode.
Sometimes that is live music. Sometimes an activity, like both people throwing pottery while they talk. Sometimes a studio or the field you are already in. Sometimes someone else in the room who already knows the guest, meeting them on camera for the first time.
The hypothesis is old and simple: change what surrounds the conversation, see how people actually talk.
Release
Volume I episodes are public because the people in them agreed to be filmed and released. We are building a formal consent process for research use and for keeping an unedited archival tape separate from the edit you see.
Until that process is in place, what is on YouTube and on this site is the released conversation only.

Lineage
Before AVDP, Theodore ran Conversations, eight IG Live interviews with guests from different backgrounds, with the audience asking questions live. AVDP is the filmed evolution of that work. Shows like Chillin Island later helped clarify the tone we were aiming for: cinematic, unhurried, unscripted conversation between people from different walks of life.
